"As I created my Essential Palette I thought about how color makes us feel about our homes, how a beautiful room can change our mood, and how we search for the right colors to enhance our lives. My work with clients has shown me how that search can seem endless and overwhelming. My hope is that by editing my palette to 28 compatible colors, the hesitation and even fear that comes with making choices will receed and a more enjoyable confidence will take its place."

WOOL A deep but soft gray, like gunmetal. Lighter and softer than true black, a little less severe but still commanding.

DOG'S EAR A rich warm gray with a reddish undertone.

URN A pale, quiet medium gray. Shadowy, classical and dignified. Has a calm attitude suitable in both modern and historic environments.

HAY A medium, golden yellow. Classic, warm and rich.

MOSS A sage green. A good neutral with stained woods. Works well inside and out.

FIELD A bright and lively middle green. Cheerful and fresh, a nice counterpoint to a deep neutral.

SACK A warm tan, like kraft paper. A great backdrop for lively textiles and objects.

NYMPH A warm, pale pink. Perfect for ceilings, bedrooms and bathrooms.

POMEGRANATE A burgundy red. Makes a bold statement. Commanding but elegant.

IRIS A purple-lavender. Bold. Can be regal or playful depending on what it's paired with.

MARINE A greenish blue. Goes from the dining room to the playroom. Great in older houses.

FROND A fresh, leafy green. Bold and cheerful. Strong but fun.

SKY A clear, slightly periwinkle blue. Uplifting. Great inside bookcases, cabinets and kid's rooms.

TIDE A deep greenish-blue teal. Dignified, sophisticated and elegant. Beautiful in libraries and dining rooms.

TULIP A pale lavender. Soft and pretty. A nice counterpoint to dark browns.

CLOVE A warm, chocolate brown. Handsome and rich. Perfect for cozy spaces.

PERSIMMON A burnt orange. Perfect for accent walls, powder rooms, entry halls - anywhere you want a burst of color.

MOUSE A soft, warm gray. A pleasing backdrop for brighter hits of color. Beautiful behind art.

GLASS A very pale greenish blue. Use as an alternative to white for ceilings, bathrooms, bedrooms.

VAPOR A very pale blue. Lovely for bathrooms and ceilings.

TWIG A warm, putty color. A great background for antiques, gilt frames and limed oak.

BEESWAX A pale, gray yellow. Subtle and unusual, neutral enough to use in place of white.

TWINE A deep, warm neutral. A natural in older homes.

SILK A pale yellow with a little heft to knock down the sweetness associated with this color.

CANVAS A tasteful update on beige. A rich, warm neutral that works beautifully with natural materials.

OAT A soft, warm and reflective white. Works well to brighten a space.

CHALK A gray white, cooler and quieter than Salt. Beautiful in older houses. Soothing.

SALT The whitest white with the subtlest of undertones that help it stay neutral - neither too warm nor too cool. All-purpose and trustworthy.
